Local teachers join national protest

TEACHERS in Tuam and across the region are taking part in the national protest held by unions ASTI and TUI against the planned changes to the Junior Cert cycle from next March.

Members holding placards are visible at the entrance to secondary schools in many locations around the county from early this morning.

Thousands of students across the county have the day off today as the schools are closed as a result of the protest.

Talks with the Education Minister broke down over the issue of teachers assessing their own students for Junior Cycle certification.
