Meningitis charity CEO calls on parents to educate themselves on warning signs

MYTHS and misinformation on meningitis are the biggest dangers facing parents of young children, according to a local charity that is celebrating its third birthday this month.
ACT for Meningitis was set up by Oranmore couple Siobhan and Noel Carroll following the loss of their four year old daughter Aoibhe to the disease.
“We are delighted to celebrate three years supporting families affected by the devastation of meningitis,” said Siobhan who is CEO of the charity.
“However, we want to take the opportunity to urge parents to be aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease and stress that each case is different, for example, the commonly known symptom of a rash does not always appear.
“We have also found that many parents believe that their children have been vaccinated against meningitis; however, children are only vaccinated against certain types of meningitis so knowing the signs and symptoms may save a life.”
