Property tax cut? Not yet, says Council

A PROPOSAL to cut the county’s property tax rate by 15 per cent was kicked to touch at the first official meeting of the new Galway Co Council after it was agreed to postpone a vote until all members could be made aware of the impact such a cut would have on the provision of services.
The Council’s finance director warned that they were looking at a €2.1 million cut in revenue, and said this would result in a significant reduction in the services the authority provided for the people of the county.
However, those supporting the cut argued that as none of the property tax revenues collected so far had been returned to the county, this was an opportunity to send out a clear message that people were tired of being overtaxed and seeing little in return.
The proposal was put forward by Sinn Féin’s Cllr Dermot Connolly, who said he had been made aware while out on the canvass for the recent election just how difficult many families were finding it to get by, and how they wanted to see a recognition of this from those they elected.
