Tuam's Sr Agnes with actor Peter O'Toole

Tuam nun signs off memorial service for Peter O’Toole

A TUAM nun has delivered an Irish blessing at a memorial for the late actor Peter O’Toole that was held in London earlier this month.
Sr Agnes Curley, who became friendly with the actor when they were both based in Clifden in the 1980s, was invited to the prestigious event by his daughter Kate.
President Michael D Higgins, a lifelong friend of the actor was also at the service that was held in London’s Old Vic Theatre.
O’Toole, best known for Lawrence of Arabia, died in December and his ashes are to be scattered in Connemara later this year.
Sr Agnes said she never expected to be invited to the memorial service in London, or to be in the company of such distinguished guests.
“I first met Peter O’Toole back when I was teaching in the community school in Clifden and we needed help fundraising to send a group of young people, who had qualified for an All- Ireland drama festival, to the Gate Theatre in Dublin,” she said.
