Football star Tom Flynn was a big loss to Athenry hurlers
By Noel Carney
ATHENRY’S young team fought bravely to the end at St Brendan’s Park, Loughrea last Friday evening, against opposition that many people fancy as a good outside bet for the County title.
If Jack Carr’s last-gasp goal for Athenry had come a bit earlier than it did (two minutes into time added on for stoppages) the outcome might have been different.
The same player went close to another major score in the first half but was crowded out by defenders, while the St Mary’s club shot eight wides when aided by a very strong wind in the first half and four more after the break.
They were dealt a blow before the game when defender Matthew Monaghan cried off with an injury and were further frustrated when they had to start without key forward Thomas Flynn who was forced to miss the game as he was flying out to Ruislip the following day with the Galway football team to play London. Athenry understood that by fulfilling the fixture on Friday night, Thomas Flynn would be available. Club officials did not comment on the matter but supporters were angry at losing the services of a star player for an important Championship game.
