Deputy Michael Kitt wants the Council to get back into building houses

Just three nama homes used for social housing outside of city

JUST three NAMA homes have been put to use for social housing by Galway County Council so far. In the city the figure is considerably higher, where 80 apartments have been taken by the City Council for social housing purposes.
However, with huge increases in the waiting lists for council housing in the county and the city, local councillors and some TDs are calling for local authorities to be more hands-on and make an urgent return to the construction of council houses.
A spokesperson for Galway County Council confirmed to The Tuam Herald that as of Tuesday, there are 3,226 people on the housing list for the county; a jump of over 1,000 people in just over a year. The figure for the City Council is estimated to be just over 4,000.
