THE beauty of the current Galway Intermediate Football Championship format is that an opening day defeat doesn't necessarily have to be ruinous for a club's season. Two victories from three round-robin fixtures is generally enough to advance from a four-team group, so it's very much a case of how the defeated respond to their Round 1 setbacks that will be most telling.
Against that backdrop, Glenamaddy, Killererin, St Gabriel's, Headford, Cárna-Caiseal, Corofin and Menlough know they simply can't afford any more slip-ups if they're to remain in the quarter-final picture. For some, maintaining their status will already be uppermost in their thoughts.
Kilconly and Oranmore-Maree will have mixed emotions after playing out a draw, while winners Leitir Mór, Kilkerrin-Clonberne, Williamstown, Cortoon Shamrocks, Caltra, Dunmore MacHales and Oileáin Árann all placed sizeable down payments on qualification for the last eight. Round 2 fixtures are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and it's all set up for another very interesting weekend in the race to lift the Cotter Cup.
