A son’s tribute to his father and a generation we should never forget

A WONDERFUL tribute appears in this week's edition. It's a tribute to Martin (Matt) Cunniffe, who played with Tuam Stars in the 1950s and 60s and was written some years ago by his son Damian but never published.
Damian writes: "At this time which is horrible for so many people, where funerals cannot be attended, where the very fabric of our society is being tested to the extremes, I decided that it was high time to submit this tribute to my father which I wrote many years ago but never published"
Matt Cunniffe from Brierfield, on the road to Moylough, was working in the sugar factory in the 50s and 60s, which made him eligible for the Stars. He was then instrumental in the setting up of Monivea-Abbey GAA Club and was their manager when they were promoted to senior for the first time in 1976.
At the time he was playing for Tuam, he was living in Horseleap, Tuam, before he got married.

The tribute is heartfelt and is a lovely read, no matter what club you support and we thank Damian for sending it to us.

Find it in this week's edition of The Tuam Herald, in shops and online www.tuamherald.ie
