THE round-robin phase of the Leinster and Munster Hurling Championships looks set to crank up the season to 11 from next weekend, but for one day only on Sunday, Gaelic Park in the Bronx and McGovern Park in Ruislip will become the epicentre of the GAA world.
Other sports may favour the glitz and glamour of starting their flagship competitions with a bang, but the All-Ireland Football Championship begins with some welcome tradition and a nod to the Irish Diaspora as the Connacht Senior Football Championship's market leaders, Galway and Mayo, headline provincial openers on foreign soil on the same day.
Galway's football fraternity will decamp to London, not quite in the same thousands that the Mayo faithful are converging on the Bronx, but in good numbers nonetheless. The Dunmore MacHales club will be in town for a 'Galway Gathering' in the Claddagh Ring, Hendon. Frosty's Bar on Kenton Road, Harrow is the venue for the Development Advocates for Tuam Stadium (DAfTS) fundraiser that will help the push towards restoring the famous ground to its former glories.
