Drive-by retirement celebration honours Monivea’s Garda Mick
UP to 400 cars took part in a drive-by celebration in Monivea last week to mark the retirement of the village’s hugely popular Garda, Michael McDermott.
The tribute was held on Friday morning as the cortege of cars took over an hour to pass the Garda station where Garda Michael and his family have lived since arriving in the village in 1998 from Castleblayney in Co Monaghan.
His friend and former colleague, retired sergeant Pat Fitzmaurice, said the scenes in the village were ‘unreal’.
