Wheelchairs will take over parking spaces

MOTORISTS in Tuam will be encouraged to stop and think about their parking choices as part of an awareness campaign in the town on Friday. The Irish Wheelchair Association’s ‘Back in 5’ initiative will see ten parking spaces occupied with empty wheelchairs and other mobility aids to highlight the misuse of disabled parking spaces in town.
The chairs will carry signs such as ‘Back in 5 mins’, or ‘Just popped to the shops’ to address the problem of motorists who don’t hold blue badge parking permits using disabled spaces. Ann Marie Jordan said people don’t understand the inconvenience they cause to the disabled when they take spaces not meant for them.
“There aren’t enough disabled spaces in Tuam to begin with and some of them don’t allow proper access for wheelchair users,” she said.
