How many seats will Fianna Fail win in Tuam?

FINE Gael’s Pete Roche has been elected on the first count in the long-awaited result of the Tuam electoral area.

The Abbeyknockmoy man secured an impressive first preference vote and exceeded the quota by 573. There are seven seats to fill in the Tuam area which has seen its boundary reduced and the number of councillors down from nine to seven.

Fianna Fail is likely to secure three seats and there’s speculation that it might even be in with a chance of taking four. Fine Gael are in line for two seats and there’s a possibility it could take three. That would mean the area wouldn’t have any independent councillor.

However, the count is at a very early stage and the picture will become clearer as transfers progress on each count.
