RURAL dwellers in Glenamaddy, Williamstown, Glinsk and surrounding areas have succeeded in retaining two public representatives in their area.

Fine Gael’s Peter Keaveney and Independent Declan Geraghty have secured their seats on the new-look Galway County Council, both being elected on the eighth and final count in the area.

Keaveney based in Glenamaddy and Geraghty in Williamstown didn’t have a joint strategy and both attribute their success to the communities they will now represent at local authority level

There have been casualties and there is huge disappointment in other areas that Fine Gael outgoing councillors Aidan Donohue and Michael Finnerty have both lost their seats.

Earlier in the evening Sinn Fein’s Dermot Connolly was elected while Ind Tim Broderick topped the poll on the first count and Michael Connolly, FF, also enjoyed a big first preference vote and was elected after the first count.

Eighth count distribution of Finnerty votes

Peter Keaveney FG +67 1898

Declan Geraghty IND +30 1808

Aisling Dolan IND +270 1841

Aidan Donohue FG +262 1352

  • Keaveney, Dolan and Geraghty elected
