TUESDAY May 26 will be a special day for a Tuam woman who is in her 105th year. Maureen Hardiman from Church View was one of a group of women who established the Tuam Guild of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA) on Friday May 26, 1950. She is the only survivor from that first meeting.
The other founding members were Kathleen Cahill, Eileen Costello, Kathleen McGrath, Francie Mooney, Kay O’Gara, Mary O’Hagan, Bunny Quinn, and Brigid (Baby) Togher.
Women who joined later and whose daughters are the custodians of their ICA photographs and data are: Mary Comer (1918-2001), Kay O’Gara (1907-1994) and Kay O’Hora (1912-2002). Surviving members of the first guild include Mary Ryan, Mary Rogers, Sara Fleming and Maureen Monaghan.
