Tuam burned 99 years ago this week

THE appetite for armed resistance to British governance in Tuam at the turn of the 20th century was the same as most places around Ireland.
With the push for Home Rule in full swing, a parliamentary approach to achieving independence within the Union was making ground, and most people appeared happy to row in behind names like Charles Stewart Parnell and John Redmond to secure this end.
Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) circles existed in the area at the time but were small, the strength of the Tuam Company in 1914 being around 100 men.
