Major upgrade for children's respite facility in Tuam

AN UPGRADED respite facility in Tuam for children with disabilities has been approved for funding.

The project will involve upgrading the existing Ability West facilities, at Cedar Court on the Galway Road.

It will provide a single-storey extension for two-self-contained units alongside a renovation of the existing property’s internal layout.

Galway East Fine Gael TD Pete Roche says the development will mean a lot to families in the area.

“For parents and carers, knowing that their child can access appropriate respite close to home can make an enormous difference. For children, it should provide a welcoming, supportive environment where they can feel comfortable and enjoy their time,” said Deputy Roche.

Welcomed progress

Deputy Roche said the announcement represents welcome progress on an issue he has strongly advocated for.

“I want to thank Julie Silke Daly [CEO] and the team at Ability West for their work in progressing this development and for continuing to highlight the needs of the people and families they support,” added the Abbeyknockmoy based TD.

“Alongside investment in buildings, we need the staffing and operational resources that allow services to open and deliver the support families need.

12 projects identified nationwide

The Tuam respite facility is one of 12 projects across the country identified following a call out from disability service providers earlier this year. All remain subject to meeting the HSE's capital approval requirements.

“This is very welcome news for Ability West and, most importantly, for the children and families who depend on its services,” commented Junior Transport Minister Sean Canney.

“Respite services provide vital support to families, and it is important that the facilities available to them are comfortable, accessible and suited to their needs.

“I want to acknowledge the excellent work carried out by Ability West in supporting people with disabilities and their families across Galway. This project will help strengthen those services in our community.”
