Man admits to laundering money through Revolut account

COURTS

A COUNTY Galway man has pleaded guilty to money laundering through a Revolut bank account.

Conor Ruane of Carnmore West, Carnmore pleaded guilty last week at Galway Circuit Criminal Court to one count of money laundering contrary to Section 7 of the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Act.

The 27-year-old accepted that on January 21, 2025 at Revolut Bank, UAB Irish Branch, Dublin Landings, North Dock, Dublin 1 he knowingly or recklessly engaged in converting, transferring, handling, possessing property that was the proceeds of criminal conduct through his Revolut account.

The court heard that he obtained a sum of €1,912 from a doctor, the victim in this case, who was not known to the offender.

Defence barrister Keith Concannon said his client had no previous criminal record.

He said that Ruane was suffering from serious gambling and drug addiction at the time of the offence.

Mr Concannon requested a probation report on Ruane and indicated that he would repay the victim in full.

Judge Brian O’Callaghan noted Ruane was a first-time offender and ordered a probation report to be carried out.

He adjourned the matter for sentencing next July.
