Garda dog sniffs out cannabis in car in Milltown

CANNABIS with an approximate value of between €800 and €1,000 was found in a car on the N17 near Milltown on Monday by a Garda-trained dog.

The vehicle was seized by Gardaí in the townland of Gortnagunned after the dog discovered a quantity of concealed cannabis.

The driver of the vehicle also tested positive for cannabis and was arrested and processed for drug-impaired driving. Another driver was arrested and processed for drug-impaired driving on the N83 in Headford.

The detections came when Gardaí with the Galway County East Community Engagement Area led a multi-agency day of action on Monday as part of Operation Intercept, on busy routes in the East Galway region between 8am and 4pm.

Local Gardaí were assisted by Garda Immigration Officers, the Regional Garda Dog Unit, members of the Divisional Crime Unit and the Divisional Roads Policing Unit, the RSA, as well as Customs officials.

Four vehicles were also seized for No Insurance and marked gas oil and VRT offences, while 28 technical offences were found on 29 HGVs at checkpoints.

Immigration officers issued five notices under the Immigration Act.
