Kalem win medal in Shanghai

A YOUNG man from Headford was honoured with a Medal of Excellence at Worldskills Shanghai 2026, a skill competition for young professionals from around the world.

Twenty-two-year-old Kalem Redmond has been awarded the medal to recognise that his Automobile Technology skills have reached the world-class standard.

Having started out working in a local tyre centre, Kalem went on to pursue an apprenticeship and has since trained with Volkswagen Group Ireland and MG Ireland. He has also competed internationally in China.

Kalem was among the 16 competitors from Ireland who joined more than 1,400 young skilled professionals from 68 countries and regions in Shanghai, competing across 64 skill competitions from September 22 to 27.

Another participant from Ireland, Charlie Ward won the Bronze Medal in Cookery and was also named the Best of Nation, recognising his performance as the competitor from Ireland whose performance best reflected excellence.

Seven members of Team Ireland including Kalem Redmond were awarded the Medals of Excellence, in skills like joinery, beauty therapy, electrical installations, cyber security and industrial mechanics.

“These results are a testament to the talent, dedication and determination of our young skilled professionals,” said the Chair of WorldSkills Ireland, Ray English.

“We are incredibly proud of every member of Team Ireland who represented their country on the world stage,” he added.
