Bridge costs may impact Athenry road project

A GALWAY East TD is demanding clarity on the timeline for the full delivery of the Athenry Ring Road after Galway County Council has been asked to prepare a revised plan.

The project aims to ease traffic congestion and support the growth of the town.

The road has been built in several sections since 2013. The third phase which will connect the Tuam Road and Monivea Road has received funding and was expected to start next year.

However, Sinn Féin Deputy Louis O’Hara has expressed concern that the funding only covers a section of less than 1km and does provide for the raising of the existing rail bridge”.

He has been told by the Department that the works on the railway bridge are likely to be cost-prohibitive and the Council has been asked to prepare a revised business case to the Department

“The town needs infrastructural investment and this key project must be progressed and delivered in full,” stated Deputy O’Hara.
