ConTempo concert for Tuam

MusicConnects, Galway’s comprehensive music programme, has announced that the first stop on its ConTempo Countywide autumn/winter tour will take place in The Mall, Tuam this Sunday, September 6 at 5pm.

MusicConnects’ theme for the season, In Conversation, features four programmes, each pairing two cultures of string quartet writing with a contemporary Irish work.

From the sun and shadow of the Mediterranean all the way to the flow of the River Sûre, this season traces one form's many accents, all performed by MusicConnects’ Ensemble-in-residence ConTempo Quartet.

The quartet’s tour opens in Tuam with the shimmer of French quartet writing through Debussy mesmerising String Quartet in G minor. Debussy has a tête-à-tête with the rhythmical hum of Chiel Meijering’s Candy Box – an electric Dutch offering.

Galway’s own Jane O’Leary rounds out the programme with Forever Begin, a work full of hope, optimism and renewal.

Executive Director Maeve Bryan said: “The string quartet has been a fascination for composers across cultures and across the ages. We are excited to discover some of the many musical accents out there, some familiar, some rarely heard.

We are delighted to feature a female Irish contemporary composer on each programme, including Galway’s own Jane O’Leary, Rhona Clarke, Marian Ingoldsby and Deirdre McKay.”
