Galway Senior Football Championship: Group 1 & 2 Profiles

With the race for the Frank Fox Cup starting on Friday evening, Herald Sport takes a closer look at the line-ups in Groups 1 and 2.

GROUP 1

COROFIN

Champions in 2023 and '24, Corofin's challenge in 2025 ended when suffering their first championship defeat to Salthill-Knocknacarra in 20 years at the semi-final stage. A draw with Milltown and victories over Naomh Anna Leitir Móir, Monivea-Abbey and Dunmore MacHales preceded a Jekyll and Hyde exit to the seasiders. They trailed by 13 points at the break but very nearly completed an inconceivable comeback. Six of their players were involved with Galway this season in captain Dylan McHugh, Liam Silke, Kieran Molloy, Brian Cogger, Conor Carson and Patrick Egan. A seventh intercounty player, Ciarán Brady, featured for his father's native Cavan. Ross Coen and Vinnie Gill impressed at U-20 level in maroon and white. Bernard Power, regular 'keeper in their All-Ireland three in-a-row, has transferred to Éire Óg in Ennis. Gary Delaney starts his second season in charge. Serious contenders once again.

CLAREGALWAY

Despite group defeats against Tuam Stars and Dunmore MacHales in 2025, secured knockout qualification on the back of a derby victory over Annaghdown. Their preliminary quarter-final defeat to Oughterard was a bitter pill to swallow in a controversial finish. Austin Sammon and Alan Daly are joint-managers and Claregalway can call on four players who were involved with Galway in 'keepers Conor Flaherty and Eamon McGrath, defender Jack Glynn and inside forward Jack Mullen. Flaherty features in attack on a regular basis for his club. Dual star Dara Whelan and their 2022 All-Ireland minor winning contingent of Ryan Flaherty, Jack Lonergan, Owen Morgan and Eanna Monaghan are part of their panel. Daniel Hughes and Matthew Collins went well with the Galway U-20s in their Connacht campaign this year. A strong league campaign brought six wins and a draw from their regulation Division 1 fixtures before a home semi-final loss to weekend's opponents Corofin.

KILLANNIN

Killannin were the closest of last season's beaten quarter-finalists to pulling off a shock when taking Tuam Stars to extra-time. Under the late Gay O'Brien, who sadly passed away in December, they were the competition's comeback kings in 2025. They trailed by nine points in their eventual group win over St. James' and 11 before edging out Mountbellew-Moylough in the knockouts. Dara Walsh was the championship's leading two-point shooter with 11 orange flags and formed a formidable midfield partnership with Ryan Roche who started this summer's Connacht final for Galway. Johnny Heaney, who stepped away from the intercounty scene for 2026, is a key figure though it remains to be seen who will be available for Killannin this weekend following spells in the United States. The Sweeney twins, captain Cathal and Patrick, are inspirational leaders while Enda Kelly and Cian Folan have carried plenty of scoring threat for a team blending experience and emerging talent. Kevin Walsh and Dave Melia head up their management.

MOUNTBELLEW-MOYLOUGH

Winners in 2021, the men in Black and Amber reached the last 12 before their elimination last season. Their sole win of the championship came against relegated St. Michael's with defeats to Salthill-Knocknacarra and Oughterard before Killannin landed the knockout blow. Their captain John Daly held the number six jersey in Galway's run to an All-Ireland quarter-final loss to Dublin, while Ciarán Mulhern starred at U-20 level and also made his senior debut in maroon and white. They were denied promotion from Division 2 by a freescoring Dunmore MacHales outfit. Chief marksman Barry McHugh misses the opening two rounds due to a suspension carried over from last year's championship. Damien Boyle, Billy Mannion, Colin Ryan, James Foley, Leo Donnellan, Colm Mannion and Eoin Finnerty are experienced names in their panel. Kilkerrin-Clonberne's Jonathan Ryan is part of Damien McHugh's management team. Pivotal game first up with Killannin.

GROUP 2

SALTHILL-KNOCKNACARRA

Get their frontliners on the field and firing and Salthill-Knocknacarra are firmly in the mix for a fourth title. The absence of this year's Galway captain John Maher was a devastating blow in their narrow final defeat to Maigh Cuilinn last October. Cathal Sweeney and Tomo Culhane stepped away from the Galway panel this season, while 2025 Young Footballer of the Year and All-Star nominee Matthew Thompson's injury woes were a setback for Padraic Joyce's side this summer. Daniel O'Flaherty and Charlie Power were part of the county panel this term while any attack spearheaded by Rob Finnerty is a potent one. The 2024 All-Star racked up 4-18 in last season's championship campaign, 2-13 of it coming in the semi-final and final alone. Finian Hanley, who lifted Frank Fox 14 years ago, continues as manager. Group favourites with another strong challenge expected.

MILLTOWN

A group draw with Corofin - in which Mike Martin, Eoin Mannion and Liam Costello provided the cutting edge - was Milltown's best performance in last season's championship. It followed an opening day win over Naomh Anna Leitir Móir. But their fluctuated wildly in a stalemate with Monivea-Abbey before a disappointing last 12 exit at the hands of St. James' who struck a flurry of second half two-pointers in Tuam Stadium. Eoin Godwin continues as manager assisted by Darren Mullahy, Ger Bowens, Brian Forde and one of their most experienced players in Cathal Blake. 'Keeper Conor Nolan, Jack Kirrane, James Kavanagh, along with the Blakes, Godwins, Costellos, Mannions and Brennans are familiar names in the blue and white. Andrew Kehoe and Dara Costello, county minor starters in 2025, are in their debut seasons at senior level.

BEARNA NA FORBACHA

Two first half goals from Darragh Costello and Tom Curran's six pointed frees were instrumental as Bearna Na Forbacha surviving the drop in 2025 with a relegation final win over St. Michael's. The big question mark is whether Sean Fitzgerald - who stepped away from the Galway panel to feature on Love Island - will feature this weekend. Ger Butler can call on a second county man in Cian Hernon who took major steps forward in Galway colours this season. 2022 All-Ireland minor medal winner Sean Dunne has progressed to playing a prominent role in attack. Goalkeeper James Keane, James Kennedy and Aaron Kavanagh are key players amongst others. With the top three advancing from the four-team groups, Saturday's match against Caltra carries major stakes.

CALTRA

Caltra were worthy winners of last season's Intermediate Football Championship. Beaten by St. Michael's in the 2024 final after a replay, Gabriel Naughton's side suffered an early defeat to Kilkerrin-Clonberne before a six-match winning streak took them past Clifden, Menlough, Micheál Breathnach, Oileáin Árann, Corofin and finally An Spidéal to lift the Cotter Cup. Their scoring returns were consistently high with totals of 3-14, 3-13, 1-15, 1-16, 2-20, 1-17 and 1-18 posted. Robbie Greene's 60th minute goal was the moment of coronation in their final victory, while Galway U-20 captain and senior panellist Mikey Mulryan was man of the match. Alan Naughton's heavy-duty scoring was a constant all through with his dozen points against An Spidéal taking him up to an extraordinary 3-50, 3-23 from play, in the five matches he played. 'Keeper Odhran Loughrey, Rian Hennelly Ryan, Owen Naughton, Oisín Butler and Kelan Murray were others to impress.
