Council to transform Athenry building

ATHENRY-Oranmore Municipal District Council will soon be able to hold meetings in their own MDC area.

Galway County Council plan to renovate an existing building in Athenry and turn it into a multi-use space with a meeting room for the Athenry MD meetings. Director of Services Liam Hanrahan told the recent meeting of Athenry MD that tenders are live for the refurbishment works on the former commercial property at Burkes Lane in Athenry. “The design works have been completed and its simply down to the restoration and renovation works,” he said. With the closing date for tenders set on Friday, August 28, construction on the site is expected to begin later this year.

The seven Athenry-Oranmore MD councillors currently travel to County Hall in the city to hold their monthly meetings.

The Athenry building was formerly used as a restaurant, offices and a place of worship but has been re-designed to have a public reception area, multi-use offices, meeting rooms, supporting spaces, utility connection etc.

“It will be a meeting room, but it won’t be an MD office,” clarified Mr Hanrahan.
