Planning sought for further housing in Tuam

Second major application in weeks

PLANNING permission is being sought for a housing development of 74 homes on the Athenry Road in Tuam, the second significant private housing project to be lodged with Galway County Council planners for Tuam this month.

Coupled with the planning application lodged earlier this month for 149 homes to be built in Farranamartin, the two private housing developments would deliver 223 new houses for Tuam if given the go ahead.

There has been no private housing development built in Tuam in up to 20 years, and last week, a planning application for 74 two-storey dwellings in the townland of Toberjarlath, close to the Glass Avenue walkway, was submitted by Leadlane (Tuam) Ltd.

The 3.1hectare (7.6acre) site is zoned as Residential Phase 1. The new homes would be made up of 49 three-bed terraced townhouses, 12 four-bed semi-detached houses, five two-bed terraced townhouses, four three-bed semi-detached houses, as well as four two-bed semi-detached homes.

A new entrance for vehicles and pedestrians onto the Athenry Road (R347) would be constructed, while there are plans for a four-metre wide active travel route to connect with the possible future development of lands to the east of the site.

Glass Avenue would be upgraded if the development is granted planning permission through water drainage works, lighting improvements and boundary walls. Footpaths from the housing estate would also connect with Glass Avenue. Car parking to include EV charging points, public open space areas, pedestrian crossings, bicycle stands, bin stores, public lighting and an ESB substation are also include in the plans for the development.

Local authority planners have until mid-August to make a decision on the planning application.

Beradine Ltd lodged planning for a Large-Scale Residential Development (LRD), of 149 homes on R1 zoned lands in Farranamartin, on the Galway Road in Tuam, this month.
