Cathaoirleach Cllr Tomás Grealish took over the chain from outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Cillian Keane.

Grealish is new Cathaoirleach of Athenry-Oranmore MD

INDEPENDENT Councillor Tomás Grealish has been appointed the new Cathaoirleach of Athenry-Oranmore Municipal District Council.

First elected in 2024, Cllr Grealish from Carnmore is the brother of Galway West TD and Minister of State for the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine, Noel Grealish.

His name was proposed by Fine Gael Cllr Peter Feeney and seconded by Fianna Fáil Cllr Sean Broderick.

Cllr Grealish thanked the outgoing Cathaoirleach Cllr Cillian Keane for a job well done and said that he would be happy if he could be as efficient and accurate as his predecessor.

Addressing his fellow members of the council, he said: “It’s not easy being a councillor with all the things coming at us.”

Director of Services Liam Hanrahan thanked Cllr Cillian Keane for running the council meetings “smoothly and on time” and said that he picked up the role very quickly.

Mr Hanrahan is now looking forward to working with Cllr Tomás Grealish. TH Body: Cllr Keane said it was a great opportunity to be in the chair for the last year and thanked everyone for their cooperation.

“It was a great learning experience and was easy enough to be in this chair,” remarked the outgoing Cathaoirleach.

Cllr Sean Broderick is the new Leas Cathaoirleach having been proposed by Cllr Keane and Fine Gael Cllr James Charity.
