Over 24,000 to flock to Salthill on Sunday
Gardaí advise Galway and Westmeath supporters to travel in good time
THERE will be traffic congestion on all approaches to Pearse Stadium on Sunday with over 24,000 people expected to attend the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship match between Galway and Westmeath. Tickets for the clash are all sold out with throw-in at 2pm.
The recently crowned Leinster champions will bring a sizeable crowd from the Midlands and An Garda Síochána have advised anyone going to Salthill to leave in good time and arrive early to avoid traffic delays going into Pearse Stadium.
Ahead of the Round 2A clash between the counties, Gardaí have encouraged supporters to use the available car parks in the city, and either walk or take public transport to and from Salthill. A regular bus service will be going to and from the city centre to Salthill during the day.
Limited parking is on offer at St. Enda’s College (Coláiste Éinde) on Threadneedle Road close to Pearse Stadium.
No tolerance for illegal parking
There will be road closures in places in Salthill, with access being maintained for local residents.
Outer cordons will be in place at Rockbarton Road; on Salthill Prom at the junctions with Dalysfort Road and at Rockbarton West; on Salthill Road Upper at the junction with Lenaboy Gardens; on Lower Salthill at the Devon Park junction; on Taylor’s Hill at the Rosary Lane junction; and at the junction of Threadneedle Road and Dr. Mannix Road.
“An Garda Síochána welcome all supporters to Salthill this Sunday, where Galway take on Westmeath in Pearse Stadium,” said a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána.
“It's important to be mindful and respectful of those that live in the area – do not block entrances to houses or business premises; do not park on footpaths or in an area that will restrict access for emergency services.
“There will be no tolerance for illegal parking in Salthill or around Pearse Stadium. Gardaí will be out and about on the beat, so if you need our help, please just stop one of us or one of the stewards.”
