Galway constructed a five-point lead but ultimately succumbed to a stirring fightback from holders Tyrone in this afternoon's All-Ireland Minor Football Championship quarter-final at the home of Donaghmore-Ashbourne GAA Club.

It was a clash between the back-to-back Ulster champions, who defeated Derry eight days earlier, and the Tribesmen whose designs for a first Connacht title at the grade since 2018 came up agonisingly short against Roscommon four weeks ago.

The Red Hands trailed by 0-16 to 1-8 shortly after the break but turned it around in impressive fashion, outscoring Galway by 2-9 to three points from there to the finish.

The unrelated Eglish duo of Matthew J Daly and Matthew F Daly scored their goals in that purple patch and followed up the excellent Brian Óg McGuckin's green flag late in the opening half.

A wind-aided Galway edged the opening quarter by 0-5 to 0-4 thanks to three Aaron Hanrahan points and one apiece from Éanna Maher and 'keeper Evan Burke (45)., Tyrone's replies came from Tomás Gallen (two), Vincent Gormley and Ruairí O'Neill.

Burke's distance free-taking was a feature of Galway's provincial campaign and the Tuam Stars clubman landed the first of four orange flags for the Tribesmen in the second quarter. The other three came courtesy Oisín Ó Neachtain, the half's standout performer.

And though Tyrone edged ahead with McGuckin's 28th minute goal, Galway reeled off the closing five points before the break through Ó Neachtain's second and third from range plus a Mikey Mitchell point that left it 0-15 to 1-8 at the change of ends.

Ó Neachtain extended Galway's lead to five after the restart, but that was as good as it got for the boys in maroon. Tyrone soon took control in the battle for primary possession and with Gormley and McGuckin elusive in attack, they ate into the deficit and eventually drew level when Matthew J Daly goaled on 45 minutes, making it 2-12 to 0-18.

Points from Conan Canavan and Logan O'Connor pushed Tyrone into a lead they would not relinquish and though Aaron Hanrahan responded, the Ulster county weren't to be denied. Crucial points coming from McGuckin, O'Connor and Martin J Daly increased their advantage before Martin F Daly palmed home their third goal deep in injury-time.
