Tuam area won’t be left out of Council’s tourism videos
A VIDEO showcasing the tourist attractions in the Tuam MD is in the offing.
Councillors at last week’s plenary meeting of Galway County Council were shown a video detailing the tourism potential of locations within the county. The video is part of the Summer Ready Report that has been produced by the local authority’s tourism unit.
Michael Owens, Galway County Council’s Director of Services with responsibility for Tourism, told the meeting that a video for the Tuam MD will be developed, after Tuam MD Councillors Karey McHugh-Farag and Mary Hoade queried why the video shown at the meeting did not include any attractions from the MD that they represent.
“There will be a video for the Tuam MD area. We might get you to promote it Cllr McHugh-Farag, as you’ve put forward a great pitch for the area,” quipped Mr Owens.
Tuam Cllr McHugh-Farag had listed off a number of attractions within the Tuam MD prior to Mr Owens’ comments.
“There are a lot of wonderful things in the Tuam MD. From Headford to Dunmore, there are some wonderful historical attractions,” offered Cllr McHugh-Farag.
Loughrea Cllr Michael Regan said the video had “concentrated on one area of the county for five minutes".
“There are plenty of places to showcase in the county. It should be more balanced going forward to other MDs,” said the Fianna Fáil Cllr.
Mr Owens said the Summer Ready Report included information about the Wild Atlantic Way, offshore islands, river walks, heritage trails, beaches and other amenities around the county.
The report is to be updated with events and festivals that are taking place around the county over the summer, according to Mr Owens.
“This is the first version of the Summer Ready Report,” said Liam Conneally, the CEO of Galway County Council.
“We will use it as much as an information piece than as to highlight the services we provide as a local authority to be enjoyed by members of the public.
“Each of the five MDs have significant substance as tourism potential. We will balance the material, and the video will reflect what the different MDs have to offer. With regards the Tuam MD and East Galway, maybe there is some niche tourism material to focus on.”
