Men’s Shed create bespoke tree for Barnaderg NS
Much cherished item
MEMBERS of Tuam Men’s Shed have created a bespoke wooden tree structure for the use and enjoyment of pupils at Barnaderg NS, no matter the weather.
The impressive piece of craftsmanship was presented to the school recently and is a much-cherished item on display.
School Principal Ann Marie Duggan initially thought of the idea having been inspired by a similar tree during a visit to the Wildlands Adventure Sports Centre near Moycullen where it’s part of a large play area for young children.
“It was lovely, and I thought having something similar would be a great addition to our school hallway,” explained Ann Marie.
She got in touch with the Tuam Men’s Shed to enquire if they might be able to make a replica. The members at the shed often take on work for local community groups and schools and were delighted to take on the challenge.
Noel Wynne, Mike Hindle and Pat Gannon travelled to Wildlands Adventure Centre to take photos and measurements of the tree there. Then they set about the complex task of making the octagonal trunk and a variety of branches of different sizes.
Once the tree structure was finished the men brought it to the school where they assembled the final pieces. The tree will now have many purposes, including displaying the arts and crafts of the schoolchildren on special occasions.
Principal Duggan gave special thanks to the Chairperson of Barnaderg NS Board of Management Geraldine O’Connor (and a former Principal of Barnaderg NS) who kindly donated to the cost involved in making the beautiful piece of carpentry.
