Wet start to 2026 is impacting on local farms’ slurry reserves
January rainfall was double
THE amount of rainfall in January was almost exactly double that of the previous January at the Athenry weather recording station, a trend that has continued into February and left some farms in this area of Co Galway under pressure with rising slurry tanks.
Met Éireann’s weather recording station in Athenry reported 114.2mm of rain for January, an increase of 57.2mm from January of 2025. The rainfall figure in Athenry for this month was 63mm, as of February 16.
Farmers in Co Galway were allowed to put slurry on their fields again on January 16, but the wet start to 2026 has meant that land in parts of North East Galway are not fit for slurry spreading.
