Muslim burial ground, a first for county

No space in city as yet

TUAM is set to become the home of Galway’s first Muslim burial ground later this year.

Galway County Council Director of Services Michael Owens confirmed to The Tuam Herald their plans to provide 46 burial plots for the Muslim community.

They will be located at a site owned by the Council adjacent to Tuam Cemetery. It will be just the sixth Muslim burial ground built in Ireland.

“This is something we have been working hard to get in Tuam since about 2018. Some progress was made in the past, but Covid-19 then scuppered the plans,” Kabir Ahmmed, a Muslim living in the town since 2002 told The Tuam Herald.
