Sports clubs appeal refusal of multi-million-euro training complex

Athenry facility to cost €13 million

AN appeal has been lodged to An Coimisiún Pleanála against a local authority decision to refuse planning permission for a provincial soccer and hockey training centre on the outskirts of Athenry.

Galway County Council planners rejected the proposal for the multi-purpose sporting facility in Mountain South last month, after a joint application was submitted in September by Galway United FC and Connacht Hockey.

The facility was expected to cost between €10million and €13million to complete, on 15 acres of land provided by Glenamaddy property developer brothers Luke and Brian Comer. County Council planners referenced that the local road network would struggle to cater for the training centre, and how it would impact on the current amenities in an “unserviced rural area".
