Galway’s People of the Year award winners revealed
DUNMORE-native Jimmy Glynn and Menlough’s Anne Mitchell are among this year’s recipients of the prestigious Galway People of the Year awards.
This year’s award winners were announced at a reception in the Galway Bay Hotel at the weekend and all recipients will be honoured at a gala banquet at the end of November.
All winners were nominated by members of the public for their work in a variety of fields which contributed to the betterment of the lives of people in their communities at home and abroad. The winners were introduced to family members and supporters by Mary Bennett, Chair of the Judging Panel, Basil Holian Watchman Holdings, sponsor, and awards organiser Ollie Robinson.
This year’s winners are:
Jimmy Glynn of Dunmore and New York for his contribution to the sporting, business, and cultural life of the community in both New York and Dunmore.
Cairdeas Disco Team Lackagh, a voluntary group, for their incredible 20 years of voluntary support for people with special needs.
Ann Mitchell from Menlough for her ongoing involvement in the local community and helping people.
Louie Casserly, Oranmore for 40 years unbroken voluntary service to the Civil Defence Galway, and for supporting Galway Hospice and St Anthonys and Claddagh Credit Union.
Row to Recovery, a volunteer-led charity, that row on the Corrib and offer support to the mental and physical health of people recovering from cancer.
Sportswomen Carrie Dolan, Ailish O’Reilly and Aoife Donohue are being honoured for their contribution to Galway Camogie and being role models for our youth.
Other recipients include Hubert Geoghegan, Ardrahan; Lorcan Mannion Bushypark; John Pardy from Lawrencetown; John Sullivan from Gort; Mary and Malachy Booth for their tireless support of good causes; sportsman John Short of Roscam and Donal Lynch from Ballybane.
Awards organiser Ollie Robinson congratulated all the winners and those who submitted nominations He had a special word of thanks for the local press who he said played a key role in the success of the awards now in their 20th year helping to secure nomination from every nook and cranny in the county. He also thanked the adjudicators and sponsor Basil Holian of Watchman Holdings.
