Williamstown too strong for Athenry

WILLIAMSTOWN qualified for the North Board Primary Junior Football Championship final with a comfortable ten-point win over Athenry in Carnaun on Saturday evening.

It brought an end to what has been a disappointing campaign for Athenry. Narrow losses to Killererin and Ballinasloe in between a heavy loss to Headford meant they were already out of contention prior to their final round-robin game.

It is a first championship final for Williamstown since they reached the 2017 Intermediate decider. Six members of that team featured for them in Saturday’s game.

The difference in what was at stake for both teams showed early on as the away side were much more ferocious in the tackle and mopped up any breaking ball around the middle third. A strong collective effort from the Williamstown defence lead to several turnovers as Athenry struggled to find shooting opportunities.
