Over 900 Galway applicants eligible for turf cutting scheme

TWO-THIRDS of County Galway applicants have been granted compensation under a turf cutting cessation scheme that first opened 14 years ago.

Figures from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage show that 851 of 1,312 applicants with Galway addresses have received compensation through the Cessation of Turf Cutting Compensation Scheme.

A further 62 of these applicants have also been deemed eligible under the scheme, and have been given legal agreements by the Department.

The Department has told this newspaper that 88 applicants from County Galway have been granted compensation through the scheme since October 2023, when a single payment of €24,100 became available. Payments were between €1,500 and €1,839 per annum (index-linked) for 15 years until then.
