Athenry AC runner set to take on 42nd Dublin City Marathon

ONLY 11 people have ran in every single Dublin Marathon since its inaugural race in 1980, and one of those people is Clare-born adopted Galwayman, Peadar Nugent, writes By Emma van Oosterhout.

The 80-year-old Athenry AC runner will compete in the 42nd hosting of the Irish Life Dublin Marathon this Sunday, October 29. A dedicated athlete, Peadar ran the marathons virtually during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

In 2020, he ran four loops around his local area of Derrydonnell, Athenry and Oranmore, keeping within the 5km rule that was in place at the time. In 2021, when the rules had become more relaxed, he ran the marathon in Esker.

Peadar Nugent was born in Killimer, Co. Clare, and worked in Dublin for 35 years as a registrar in the High Court. During this time, he lived in Co. Meath until his retirement in 2004 when he moved to Galway.

Peadar has been running throughout his life, but began initially as a sprinter. When he was in his 30s, a colleague spontaneously suggested to him that they run the Dublin Marathon, and the rest is history, as they say…
