Headford woman making waves on Macra scene
Anyone between 17 and 35 years of age can join organisation
NOT everyone involved in Macra na Feirme is interested in farming.
The organisation has 10,000 members spread across 170-plus clubs nationwide, a good number of whom are not from a farming homestead.
“You don’t have to be a farmer to go to a Macra meeting. It’s not a farming organisation, it’s a rural youth organisation,” said Niamh Farrell, a member of the Green Fields Macra na Feirme club in Headford.
“There’s a big misconception out there. A lot more of the members are not farmers. The competitions cover everything.
“There’s lots of stuff to get involved in. There’s debating, basketball, bowling, the competitions sections are so broad.”
Affiliated members are aged between 17 and 35 and each Macra club has a designated Training and Development Officer. Debbie Donnelly is the one covering Galway, Clare, Roscommon, Westmeath and Longford…
