Not quite a New Year's getaway break for Michelle and Eoin, pictured ahead of their surgeries at Belfast City Hospital.

Gift of love and life

A HUSBAND and wife from North Galway woke up last week, one with a new kidney, the other a kidney less – and one didn’t donate to the other!

While their kidney surgeries took place on the same day in the same hospital, Michelle Tooher was a living donor to a complete stranger as part of a scheme that meant her husband Eoin Madden received a transplant from another living donor.

It's a remarkable good news story and happy ending that follows five tough years of dialysis for Eoin, who was anxiously hoping to get a third transplant.
