Galway spa introduces new therapies for cancer patients

The Spirit One spa at Radisson Blu Hotel in Galway has introduced an innovative series of nurturing treatments for cancer patients called touch therapy. The treatments use products from the Lindi Skin line, developed specifically with the skincare needs of cancer patients in mind. Using balms, cooling serums and moisturisers, which are designed to soothe and benefit skin compromised by chemotherapy and radiation, these specialised touch therapies can reduce some of the common side effects of cancer treatments. The product range was developed with the input of an advisory board compiled of oncologists, dermatologists and cancer patients. The therapies are suitable for men and women at any stage of a cancer diagnosis as well as those recovering from cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends massage therapy to aid cancer patients, as it can bring comfort and improve the quality of life for patients. Massage during treatments and recovery can lift the mood, and offer comfort and support. Touch therapy for cancer clients - an extremely gentle technique designed for individuals of any age in a more fragile physical condition - was taught on-site to the spa staff by trainer Christine Clinton, who has completed the Medical Massage for Cancer Patients course at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York. Touch therapies for cancer patients are endorsed by the Irish Massage Therapists Association and complementary therapies are recommended by the Irish Cancer Society, to help with specific side effects. Ten per cent of the cost of each treatment will be donated to a chosen cancer charity of the month. Christine Clinton is the founder and expert trainer for Touch Therapy spa therapies. She will be holding a free forum for cancer patients and those working in this area on Monday, May 20 from 1 to 3 pm in the Radisson Blu hotel in Galway.
