How tall are your GAA giants?

HOW MANY of the Galway football squad that won the 1998-2001 All-Ireland titles would get on the 1964-65-66 three-in a-row team? And were some who played in between those famous successes better than any of the All-Ireland winners? Would the three JCs (John Connolly, Joe Cooney, Joe Canning) make the best Galway hurling team of the last 50 years? Comparing players from different eras is the ultimate in inexact science but it's no less intriguing for that. It's also a great way of stimulating debate, something a special magazine in next Monday's Irish Independent is certain to do. The Indo have spent many weeks working through all the counties, selecting the best hurling and football teams of the last fifty years (1962-2012) and next Monday they will publish them all, accompanied by many rarely seen photographs extending over five decades. No doubt, the various selections will generate lots of debate, doubly so in a dual county like Galway which produced so many outstanding footballers and hurlers in an era when the Sam Maguire and Liam McCarthy Cups were draped in Maroon and White on eight occasions (1964-65-66-80-87-88-98-2001).
