LETTER TO THE EDITOR

A plaque to honour dead of all wars Dear Editor, I find it very hard to believe what I read in last week's Tuam Herald regarding a plaque to commemorate all Tuam natives who died in all wars in the service of peace. This plaque is to remember our own people who gave their lives to make this world a better place in which to live. How could our Mayor make such a statement as 'having no interest' in such a plaque? Does she think those heroes are not deserving of being remembered? [private] As for the statement from the Town Manager 'placing the plaque on the pavement' to be crapped on by dogs, chewing gum etc. Tuam people know what covers our paths. Is this what our Town Manager thinks of Tuam and its heroes? It is past time for such an honour to be bestowed on all our war heroes. What is proposed is a small plaque in memory of all who died in all wars. In my opinion, outside the Town Hall is the most suitable place to hang such a plaque. On another subject, Tidy Towns, our town was given a very bad mark on our litter problems. I have not read any comments in support of our hard-working committee. I cannot figure out how our town can be judged at all. After all, there is not a street in town which is not affected by the Big Dig â€â€ burst sandbags, signs, chippings all over our paths. I am sure the Tidy Towns Committee has tried to have derelict houses, rented houses, cleaned up, but to no avail. How can we expect people to care when Galway County Council leaves our most important places, eg Cemetery Gates, in such a dreadful mess. It is very hard to work without the support of our Authorities. Yours etc Tommy Gavin Tuam[/private]
