Headford’s young fishing star to cast off for first Irish cap
SCHOOL may be out for summer but one Headford student is gearing up for an eventful break as he prepares to represent his country in fly fishing.
Oisín Reilly, 14, has just completed his first year in Presentation College in the town and is looking forward to earning his first Irish cap later in the summer when he is part of a 14-man Ireland team that will compete in an international competition in the UK.
The keen angler has been fishing from a young age under the tutelage of his father Frank Reilly, an accomplished angler who has captained the Irish team in fly fishing over several years of representing his country.
Oisín said he was looking forward to travelling to Cambridgeshire in August for the competition that will bring the top talent in Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales together at Grafham, one of the top fishing reservoirs in the UK.
“I started fly fishing about five or six years ago with my Dad but I’ve been out on a boat with him since I was four, and I’ve two All-Ireland medals for fly tying, which he has also taught me,” said Oisín.
