Seventh heaven for Corofin

SUNDAY was a day loaded with significance for Corofin.
Aside from the prize of a coveted Connacht title and a return to the All-Ireland series, another defeat to their old nemesis St Brigid’s would have placed 2016 alongside 2006 and 2011 in a zero-from-three record. Despite all they’ve achieved it would have been a bitter pill to swallow.
Corofin rose to the occasion, though, and left the Kiltoom-based club beaten and battered by 14 points. By the end of the afternoon they’d also moved alongside Clann na nGael at the top of Connacht’s roll of honour on seven titles.

“It’s a savage feeling to beat a great St Brigid’s team. We’re delighted with the win. We were wasteful at times but the goal came at the right time. We’ll enjoy this week and get back training over Christmas and look forward to the semi-final.”
For Gary Sice, a Connacht winner with club and county in 2016, it was satisfying to deliver when the stakes were piled so high.
“It’s nice to perform on big days but we genuinely went about our business well today,” said Sice. “We played some good football. The pitch was excellent and allowed us to play good football. Not enough to win the next day we go out [against Dr Crokes] but enough to do the damage we did today.”
