The Witches Garden - hoeing a very different kind of row
THERE once was a saying among our émigrés in Britain: “Drinking light and bitter and rolling your own — you’ll never go home now.” In the context of the couple who operate The Witches Garden in Kilconnell, Ballinasloe that might be amended to: “Drinking your own knotweed wine and growing your own tobacco. You’ll never go back to the nine to five now.”
Add in running a family farm, producing their own food, tending to an impressive exotic garden and running their own home-manufactured soap and body cream industry, and you’ll understand why Aidan and Cherry Mullins appear so contented with their lot and why they haven’t a notion of trading it for a more conventional lifestyle.
They’re as busy as they could be but both readily admit that even if they weren’t making their living from their enterprises they’d be doing much the same just for the fun of it.
