Connacht U-16 football finals — will Galway bate Mayo?
By JIM CARNEY GALWAY and Mayo football rivalry will be renewed next Monday (August Bank Holiday) in the final of the Connacht U-16 Football Championship, for the Ted Webb Memorial Cup, at Ballyhaunis GAA grounds, 4.30 p.m. The finalists are Galway County and Mayo North-West.The curtain-raiser at 2.30 will be the U-16 Shield final: Galway City and West vs Mayo South-East.This popular annual competition is named in memory of a very talented young footballer of the 1970s. There was shock in Mayo and Connacht football circles in early Spring 1976 when news broke of the car accident (at a railway crossing) that tragically claimed Ted Webb's life. Son of a well-known Ballyhaunis couple, Eddie Webb and his wife Noreen (née Lyons), Ted had first shown promise as a footballer in Ballyhaunis N.S. and later at the local secondary school, and at Carmelite College, Moate. His finest hour on the playing fields came in 1974 when he helped Mayo win the All-Ireland U-21 Football Final replay with Antrim, 2-10 to 2-8.Connacht Games Manager John Tobin, all the county games' managers in the province and the coaches of the various development squads are urging football fans to support next Monday's double-bill in Ballyhaunis, where there will be an opportunity to spot the talent likely to play County Minor for Galway and Mayo next year and in 2013.Galway County panel: James Healy (Annaghdown), vice-captain; Luke Burke (Caltra), Cathal Reilly (Corofin), Eoin Ó Ceallaigh (Caltra), Noel McDonagh (Mountbellew-Moylough), Jack Parsons (Ballinasloe), John Rattigan (Dunmore MacHales), Richard Fahy (Headford), Stephen Lawless (Caherlistrane), Brian Shaughnessy (Ballinasloe), captain; Joseph Donnellan (Cortoon Shamrocks), Martin Connell (Cortoon Shamrocks), Aaron McDonagh (Headford), Eoin McCormack (Ballinasloe), Cormac Raftery (Glenamaddy), Eoin Moran (Ballinasloe), Darren Moran (Headford), Kevin Moylan (Annaghdown), Kevin Newell (Kilconly), Cian Dooley (Ballinasloe), Niall Cunningham (Headford), Noel Garvey (Monivea-Abbey), Danny Kerr (Annaghdown), Thomas Gleeson (Dunmore MacHales), David Kerr (Annaghdown), Conor Casserly (Caherlistrane), Matthew Mills (Monivea-Abbey), Dermot O'Halloran (Athenry), Ciarán Kerin (Annaghdown), David Newell (Corofin).Team management: John Donnellan, Cathal Blake, Enda Daly, Declan Meehan.Mayo North-West:
Jack Deane (Ballycroy), Rory O'Hara (Naomh Pádraig), Ciaran McNally (Westport), Conor Naylor (Ardnaree), Eamon O'Malley (Louisburg), Jason Howley (Knockmore), Michael Hall (Breaffy), Noel McLoughlin (Ballina), Eddie Doran (Achill), Seán Staunton (Ballintubber), Ross Geraghty (Ballina), Val Roughneen (Balla), Diarmuid O'Connor, captain (Ballintubber), Thomas Murphy (Ballina), Pádraig Prendergast (Louisburg), James Langan, vice-captain (Knockmore), Michael Plunkett (Ballintubber), Ronan Carolan (Parke), Liam Irwin (Breaffy), Mathew Keane (Naomh Pádraig), Cathal Barrett (Belmullet), Keith Mulchrone (Breaffy), Ciarán Tracey (Ballina), Stephen Finnerty (Ballintubber), Conor Brennan (Balla), Brian Walkin (Ballina Stephenites), Ryan Keane (Ballina Stephenites).Team management: Barry Murphy, Martin Costello, Martin Doherty, Tommy O'Boyle, Vinny Feeney.Galway City and West:
Beartla Ó Conghaile (An Cheathrú Rua) Dónal Seoige (St James's), Colin Hanbury (St Michael's), Darragh Maloney (Salthill-Knocknacarra), James Gilmore (Barna), Maidhc Ó Conghaile, captain (Cumann Micheál Breathnach), Aaron Kane (Salthill-Knocknacarra), Eoin Stenson (Oranmore-Maree), Ciarán Gaffney (Salthill-Knocknacarra), Mark Coyle (Claregalway), Liam Mac Donnacha (An Cheathrú Rua), Enda Tierney and Niall Lee (both Oughterard), Craig Hansberry (Claregalway), Eamon Brannigan (St Michael's), Gary Farrell (St James's), Cian De Lampert (Éire Óg - Fr Griffin's) Patrick Fahy and Conor Lowndes (both Maigh Cuilinn), Daniel McManus (Loughrea), Cormac O'Connor (Salthill-Knocknacarra), Adrian Gannon (Barna), Conall Morgan (Maigh Cuilinn), Dylan Thornton and Eoin Walsh (both St Michael's).Team management: Kevin Johnson, Denis Carr, Pádraig Ó Conaire, Breandán Ó Conámhna.Mayo South-East:
Mark Mulligan (Claremorris), David Kenny (Aughamore), Daniel Cunnane (Aughamore), Paul Walsh (Kiltimagh), Aaron Costello (Claremorris), Kevin Jordan (Mayo Gaels), David Caldwell (Ballaghaderreen), Stephen Coen, captain (St Gerald's), Paul Kelly (Kiltimagh), Thomas Waldron (Davitts), Morgan Lyons (Ballyhaunis), Shane Byrne (Kiltimagh), Keith O'Donnell (Ballaghaderreen), Darragh Doherty (Kilmaine), Stephen Burke (Ballinrobe), Macauley Fumagalli (Ballaghaderreen), Ronan Lynch (Ballaghaderreen), Ronan Finn (Claremorris), Fintan Canavan (Mayo Gaels), Conal Mooney (Kiltimagh), Brendan Walsh (Claremorris), Ronan Quinn (Carras), Nigel Cassidy (Charlestown), Fergus Boland (Aughamore), James Walsh (Claremorris).Team management: James Mitchell, Ray Connelly; also selectors Eugene Lavin, Johnny Monaghan, OisÃÂn Gill, Tom Byrne.
