Galway going for three All-Ireland titles in two weeks
By JIM CARNEY It's a â€Ëœmust win' All-Ireland Camogie final for Galway FOR the second successive year it's Galway vs Wexford in the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship final for the coveted O'Duffy Cup, at Croke Park next Sunday. Wexford are the defending champions and are slight favourites to win again, although it's widely felt that Galway will be better, and better positioned in their line-out, this year. Again under the management of Noel Finn, from Cappataggle, Galway are highly motivated to make up for an uncharacteristically flat performance this time twelve months ago. The older players will know it must be much improved next Sunday, and nothing less will do or the veterans will go into retirement with massive disappointment and regrets. Only one Galway player has been there, done that and worn a winner's jersey: Veronica Curtin, from Kinvara: winner of an All-Ireland Minor medal in 1994, Junior in 1995 and Senior in 1996. For the record, the team which won Galway its only All-Ireland Senior title, in 1996, was: Louise Curry, Olive Costello, Anne Broderick, Olivia Broderick, Pam Nevin, Dympna Maher, Sharon Glynn, Carmel Hannon, Martina Harkin, Imelda Hobbins, captain; Denise Gilligan, Veronica Curtin. Subs., Olivia Coen, Gretta Maher, Bridget Kilgannon, Anne Forde, Carmel Allen, Rita Coen, Catriona Finnegan, Cora Curley. The Seán O'Duffy Cup is named after a Mayo man from Killawalla outside Westport, a tireless promoter of the women's hurling game in its early days; he was a major figure in Irish history too, best known as a close associate of Michael Collins. Recently, Galway qualified for the final by defeating Kilkenny at Nowlan Park, 2-13 to 2-7, with this team: Susan Earner (Eyrecourt); Therése Manton (Mullagh), Sinéad Cahalan (Mullagh), Lorraine Ryan (Killimordaly); Ann Marie Hayes (Killimor); Therése Maher (Athenry), Heather Cooney (St Thomas's); Niamh Kilkenny (Pearse's), Ann Marie Starr (Killimor); Orla Kilkenny (Pearse's), Sandra Tannian (St Thomas's), Aislinn Connolly (Castlegar); Tara Ruttledge (Portumna), Brenda Hanney (Killimor), Veronica Curtin (Kinvara). Subs used: Martina Conroy (Killimor) and Noreen Coen (Athenry).
