Galway ladies face battle to retain provincial title

MACHALE PARK has already proved a happy hunting ground for Galway football this summer, and on Sunday afternoon the county’s ladies bid to emulate the achievements of their men when they take on Mayo in the TG4-sponsored Connacht Senior Championship final at the Castlebar venue.
Mayo have been unable to prise the CBE Cup from the Tribeswomen’s grasp in recent times and last year brought a fourth successive title despite the best efforts of Cora Staunton.
The irrepressible Carnacon forward scored 1-15 for Mayo, 1-5 from open play, but still finished up on the losing side as a late surge saw Galway over the line on a 0-21 to 1-17 scoreline.
Of the two teams, Mayo bring the better form into this year’s renewal.
