Housing charity launches awareness campaign

MORE than 1,300 households are at risk of homelessness in Galway, according to the figures released by housing charity Threshold.

Since January, Threshold has supported over 2,100 households in Galway, 1,367 of which were at risk of homelessness. During the same period in 2025, the charity supported 1,686 households, including 1,292 at risk of homelessness.

Launching its annual Own Your Rights Campaign, the charity highlighted that tenancy termination was one of the main reasons for almost 40 per cent of people getting in touch with them.

Nationally, Threshold supported 2,200 more households between January to September 2026, recording an increase of 12 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The number of households getting in touch with Threshold while at risk of homelessness in Ireland has also increased from 5,965 to 6,767.

“The campaign is designed to make private renters across Ireland more aware of their rights and of Threshold’s role in supporting them,” said Cat Clark, Campaign Officer for Threshold.

She believes that it is the most important time for renters to understand their rights, know where to turn for advice and feel confident seeking support when they need it.

“Our free advice service is here to provide practical support and guidance, whether someone is contacting Threshold for the first time or has spoken to us before,” she added.

The two-week campaign is running from now until Friday, October 16. The charity has also created a podcast series which answer frequently asked questions renters have.
