Debt will take 700 years to pay off

COURTS

A County Galway man who owes a non-profit organisation more than €750,000 won’t clear his debt for 700 years!

The Motor Insurance Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) secured an instalment order at Ballinasloe District Court last week.

Solicitor Joseph Jordan, on behalf of MIBI – the body that compensates victims of road traffic accidents caused by uninsured and unidentified vehicles – said the man owes more than €774,000.

Mr Joseph sought a monthly instalment order of €200 for MIBI.

Solicitor Jack Duncan said the man was on disability allowance and would not be able to pay that amount.

Judge James Faughnan said it “makes no sense to me” that the District Court would be used to pursue that level of debt. Mr Duncan confirmed to the court that his client did not have any assets that MIBI could pursue.

Judge Faughnan granted a monthly instalment order of €100 and said it would take over 700 years to repay.
