Sylane NS included in road safety initiative
WALKING, cycling and scooting to school is set to be made easier at Sylane NS.
Sylane NS has been included in round five of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme, a national initiative that focuses on improving road safety in the vicinity of schools for children and their families.
Some of the measures implemented at schools include footpaths, traffic calming, cycle facilities and improved crossings.
Pupils and teachers from Sylane NS joined Junior Transport Minister Seán Canney at Government buildings for the launch of round five of the SRTS, which takes in an additional 83 schools from across the country, bringing the total number of schools in the SRTS to 608.
“This is excellent news for the pupils, parents, staff and wider community at Sylane National School,” said Minister Canney.
“Safe Routes to School is about making it easier and safer for children to walk, cycle or scoot to school while improving road safety around our schools. I know this will be warmly welcomed locally.”
Scoil Íde in Salthill and Scoil Cholmáin Tuaríní in Moycullen have also been named in the latest round of the SRTS Programme.
Five schools in Galway have already had infrastructure projects completed through the SRTS, with projects at other schools in the county at various stages under the programme. The SRTS Programme was developed in 2020 by the NTA and Green-Schools, An Taisce.
